Rutgers has their 2024 QB wrapped up with AJ Surace and got ahead of the game on Saturday landing rising 2025 Florida dual threat Sean Ashenfelder (6-1, 180). The Scarlet Knights got their three-star target on campus over the summer and secured his verbal commitment on Saturday while in town for the big 35-16 win over Virginia Tech.
After visiting Piscataway (N.J.) in July, the Creekside High School (St. Johns) field general was a hard lean towards the Scarlet Knights.
“I love the culture and the coaching staff, and everything about the program,” Ashenfelder said. “I love how it is a family there and how they invited me into that family.”
Ashenfelder continued, “I was talking to them on the phone, they invited me up to a camp. I went up there in July, that is when the interest really started ramping up. They saw me live, and I went back on Saturday and committed.”
Getting to see the Scarlet Knights’ scheme in person, Ashenfelder spoke about offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca’s attack.
“Coach Ciarrocca is one of the best in the game,” Ashenfelder stated. “He has a track record of producing great offenses.”
Asked how Rutgers’ staff sees his skills fitting into their scheme, Ashenfelder replied, “They like my athleticism, my ability to make off-platform throws, and how fast I process everything.”
Rutgers’ head coach Greg Schiano and coach Ciarrocca were the first to receive Ashenfelder’s verbal pledge.
“I told coach Schiano and coach Ciarrocca, they were pumped up,” Ashenfelder shared. “I was nervous, but it is very reassuring. There is a lot of work to be done, but with the work that has been done it has paid off.”
The first to commit to Rutgers’ 2025 class, Ashenfelder is excited to start recruiting others to join him in New Jersey.
BEYOND THE INTERVIEW
Ashenfelder worked his way to 14 offers after a strong sophomore campaign. Splitting snaps with then senior Wilson Edwards, his Knights squad posted a 9-3 record with Ashenfelder throwing for 923 yards and nine touchdowns while carrying the rock 67 times for 354 yards with six more scores.
