Putting pieces of any puzzle together can either be a joy or a pain. There is always a certain point in the process where a key piece here and a key piece there come together where the finished product starts to come into view giving promise to continue forward. During the 2016 season, Kamron Love started putting the pieces of his puzzle together for Santa Fe High School showing a lot of promise as to how that finished product could look by National Signing Day in 2019.
Love was limited to five games during his sophomore season but during the games played the 6-0, 155 pound, corner was able to showcase his budding skills. His speed and quickness was on display, his ability to read plays while instinctively reacting, and his no fear attitude on the gridiron stood out. The Wolves posted an 8-3 record against 6A Oklahoma competition last season with a lot of hope and promise for the future on defense riding on Love’s expected projected path.
The nagging injuries are behind Love with a full off-season of camps ahead of him. As the Edmond area product ventures out to take on the best of the best, scouts and college coaches will get a chance to see his 4.16 shuttle speed in person along with all of the variables that makes Love an intriguing prospect to watch going forward.
In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with Love covering his sophomore season and off-season plans gaining insight on one Oklahoma talent to watch in 2017.
Interview
Kamron, what was it like for you last season getting your first big exposure to top level Oklahoma football?
“It was a learning experience. The game was a lot faster with more speed on the field. I had to adapt and learn from my coaches. It was a learning experience.”
How did your game improve last season?
“I got a lot quicker, smarter, stronger, and overall came away with a better football IQ. I watched a lot of film with my coaches and at home to prepare each week.”
How else did you prepare for each game besides watching film?
“On game day, I would listen to music all day to get my head right even through warm ups. Then I went out there and played. During the week, we watched film after practice every day for about 30 minutes to an hour. I would watch more film at home. We went over the game every morning too.”
You played corner last season, will you stay at corner during your junior year or move to another spot on the field?
“This season I will play corner, receiver, and I might rotate in at safety.”
You have the No. 80 jersey so I am guessing you have some time in at receiver, but are you excited about playing receiver next season in addition to corner?
“Yes, sir. I’ve been playing receiver my whole life. Playing receiver next year is a better opportunity to play both sides of the ball and showcase what I can do.”
Will you play any special teams next season?
“I was back on kick return and punt return last year. I will do the same during my junior year.”
What is your off-season workout routine?
“I’m working out with my dad (Sean Love) this off-season. We are doing speed drills, catching drills, and all of the things I need to work on for my skills to be better.”
What areas of your game are you specifically trying to fine-tune this off-season?
“My footwork, back pedaling, using my hands, flipping, and being stronger with the receiver. On offense, I’m working on running better routes – crisp routes.”
What camps are you looking at attending?
“I’m going to Rivals’ speed camp in April, but I’m not sure about the rest yet.”
Which schools are showing recruiting interest in you so far?
“Oklahoma State. I went to most of Oklahoma State’s games last season. I have spoken with Coach (Mike) Gundy (head coach), Coach Glenn Spencer (defensive coordinator), and their defensive backs coach, Coach (Dan) Hammerschmidt. I had a recruiting pass to go to all of the games last year.”
What is your cumulative GPA?
“3.15.”
I saw that you have already taken the ACT, what did you score on the ACT?
“I got a 21. I am planning on taking it again until I get a 28.”
Do you play any other sports for Santa Fe?
“Yes, sir. I played basketball.”
How is the season going?
“We just won regionals.”
Last question. What are your personal goals for the 2017 season?
“I am trying to get a lot stronger than I am now. I am also trying to put some weight on. In the classroom I want to keep my grades up and be a starter that can be relied on this season.”
Kamron, thanks for your time today and good luck with your upcoming camps.
