At any level of the game, production on the field can be tied directly to a player’s fit within a given scheme. During the 2022 season, Granada High School (Livermore, Cali.) was running a Wing-T offense showing off the dual threat abilities of Quinn Boyd (6-3, 190). When the Friday night lights turn on this fall for the Matadors, Boyd will be able to showcase more of his arm talents in the team’s new Spread offense.
The Class of 2024 QB kept the stat tracker busy last fall credited with 1,996 yards passing and 17 touchdowns while covering 308 yards on the ground tallying seven more scores.
“We run a Wing-T usually, but we have the weapons, and I can throw it; this year we are switching to a Spread,” Boyd said. “We have crossing routes and Delta; we will have an 80-20 pass-run ratio this year.”
Having the option to air it out on Fridays, Boyd is preparing for the tasks getting extra work in this offseason playing 7-on-7 with BTA and QB coach Victor James.
“I am working on footwork and mobility,” Boyd stated. “Last year it was tough getting used to the game; I have prepared myself by getting faster, bigger, and stronger to cope with everything on the field to be the best I can for every game.”
Mountain West teams and beyond are showing recruiting interest in Boyd.
“UNR, Nevada, came to watch me throw, Western Michigan, Utah State, and Boise State a little bit,” Boyd shared. “Nevada, Western Michigan, Virginia, and Fresno State have been reaching out the most.”
With spring ball getting going for the Matadors, more teams will get an opportunity to see Boyd sling it.
“I’m pretty sure Fresno State is coming by,” Boyd stated. “I have talked to Virginia. UCLA might be, but I’m not 100 percent sure about Virginia or UCLA coming.”
After a spring visit with Cal, more on campus contact will be made by Boyd along with college camp performances.
“I’m going all over this summer,” Boyd said. “I will start at Western Oregon, the Avery Strong Showcase, and I know I will be at Virginia, Virginia Tech, and the Sac State showcase; that is a three-day camp with multiple schools there. This summer I will also camp at UNLV, Fresno State, and then I finish off through the Midwest at Michigan State, Miami-Ohio, and Western Michigan.”
In prep mode for the summer camps, Boyd competed at an Elite 11 regional.
“I thought it went pretty well,” Boyd shared. “Seeing myself stack up against some of the guys on the west coast was eye widening for me. Competing with them, the four- and five-stars, keeping up them and doing what they can do showed me I can compete with them.”
Boyd stood out in more than one way at the regional, “I was in the top-five, I was No. 1 in release time, and I was top five in velocity and release time.”
