Win one, lose one, and keep on going – that has been the motto for the Mustangs on the recruiting trail so far this year, and have had great success in the process. On Thursday, SMU added another in-state talent when defensive end Noah Jones verbally committed.
Jones tore up opposing Texas 5A talent playing on the inside but primarily on the outside at defensive end for Lancaster High School. The big 6’4”, 255 pound, lineman proved to be persistent against the pass pressuring the quarterback fighting off double-teams and a strong run stopper. The strong defensive help guided the Tigers to a 10-4 mark in 2015.
Offers started coming down the pipeline in March for Jones with North Texas, Nevada, Colorado State, New Mexico, Kansas, Tulsa, Louisiana-Lafayette, Illinois, and Purdue all putting scholarships on the table through May. Jones also had offers from Indiana, Louisiana Tech, Texas State, and Tulane.
Jones posted his commitment on Twitter writing, “I am Proud To Say I Have Committed To SMU. #ponyup.”
SMU has weathered some deflections over the spring with the most recent being Dallas area cornerback Darrion Green. Still, the Mustangs have continued to add talent with Jones being the 13th commitment to the 2017 class.
