When the 2015 season ended, the LSU Tigers saw a normal attrition of talent leaving the program but an unusual amount from their wide receivers corps. Among the players leaving included John Diarse, who transferred to TCU, and Kevin Spears (undecided). The third member of the group to leave was Trey Quinn, a high school record setter from Louisiana.
Quinn, a former four-star, set a national record with Barbe High School in receiving yards with 6,566 passing former record holder Dorial Green-Beckham (Missouri) and set a Louisiana state career record with 357 receptions. His senior year ended with 1,967 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns scored.
In two seasons with LSU, Quinn appeared in 25 games starting nine. His career totals at LSU was a dramatic drop-off in production ending with 276 yards off 22 receptions without a touchdown during the 2014 and 2015 campaigns.
On Sunday, Quinn found a new home with SMU after being granted a release from LSU in February.
Second-year SMU head coach Chad Morris has brought some excitement to the Dallas area, even after suffering through a 2-10 season in 2015. The Mustangs use the Air Raid offense, which has helped lure area recruits, along with a 4-2-5 base defense. The opportunity to be in a highly productive offense, and with a program on the rise, has led to 11 early verbal commitments to the Mustangs 2017 recruiting class.
Quinn should fit in well with Morris’ offense. The 6-foot, 197 pound, target brings a wealth of experience and productivity with him to SMU. Quinn will have three years to play two once cleared for eligibility by the NCAA after transferring.
