Outside linebackers do not rack up 94 tackles in a season by letting the action come to them. Throughout the 2022 season, Carter Dalton was that do-all backer in the box for Venice High School (Fla.) helping the Indians march their way to the state title game. Dalton (6-2, 200) is that modern era linebacker who contains, covers, and thumps in the box. That action is getting extra attention this spring.
Dalton did a little bit of everything last season, and did it well. Technically sound with a strong understanding of the game, the 2024 talent has the closing speed to keep everything in front of him producing 82 solo tackles during his junior year.
“We’re a base 4-3 defense,” Dalton said. “Against a Spread, I got the five-yard drop. In Indiana, which is our man, I usually have the tight end.”
Dalton continued, “Drops are very important in our defense, I am making sure I am containing the outside; redirecting is important as well. I am working on having fluid hips, my speed in drops, and getting to the ball this offseason.”
Reporting a 4.56 in the 40-yard dash, the soon-to-be senior is putting time in the weight room.
“My bench max is 310 and my squat max is 415,” Dalton stated.
UPenn, Lafayette, and Cornell have swung by the Indians’ campus to talk with the 4.1 cumulative GPA student-athlete this spring. Dalton updated other schools evaluating him this spring.
“Holy Cross and UNH (New Hampshire),” Dalton said. “With Holy Cross, I’ve been talking with them and texting. They went to the Green and White (Venice spring game). Coach (Brian) Vaganek (LB), he is showing the most interest, and I am showing interest in them as well.”
A spring visit was taken in Tampa with the Bulls.
“I did go to USF to watch them scrimmage,” Dalton shared. “I liked it a lot. USF has a really nice campus. I like their program, and I like their play style.”
The next round of visits will be tied in with college camps this summer.
“Louisville reached out and invited me to one of their camps,” Dalton stated. “I’m going to a Dartmouth mega camp and to Holy Cross. FSU has a mega camp I’m trying to get to.”
