College programs have placed 24 offers in front of Maine South High School (Park Ridge, Ill.) quarterback Jameson Purcell in hopes of landing the four-star talent. With all the tools at his disposal to run any kind of offense, Purcell (6-2, 190) has the running dimension to his game that kills defenses adding to the want of his services at the next level.
Recruiting has been hot and heavy this offseason for the Class of 2027 prospect. College teams have headed to the Hawks’ campus and Purcell is returning the favor traveling around the country. All the visits are important with a possible late summer verbal commitment in the works.
The Super Sophomore was throwing darts in windows throughout the 2024 campaign, completing 69 percent of his attempts (128-of-186) with 21 touchdowns tossed. No. 15 was timely with his running decisions taking 27 totes for 132 yards with two trips into the end zone.
The want to compete shines through in 7-on-7 tournaments with National Playmakers Academy (NPA) Dream Team this spring.
“7-on-7 is going well,” Purcell said. ” I’ve gone to 2-3 tournaments so far, last year we did a lot of tournaments. It has been good. I’m performing really well. I can see a huge improvement coming from last year to this year. 7v7 is more throwing and mechanics, and ball placement, huge improvement there.”
Competing at the Rivals camp in Los Angeles and Under Armour in Nashville just over a week ago, Purcell is spinning it against top competition.
“The Under Armour camp went really well,” Purcell shared. “I think I threw well there. I have Elite 11 coming up; I am doing that in Tennessee in a couple of weeks. That will be another big camp.”
Purcell spoke about his offseason focus preparing for the 2025 schedule, “The biggest thing for me is being 205 to 215 pounds by the start of the season. From a QB standpoint, everyone at this level can throw well. I have been on the white board working on defense recognition and the mental side of things. I have been in the weightroom a lot more this year than last year. Veloctiy is a big part too.”
As the game grows, so grows those recruiting the four-star. During the open period, Indiana, Nebraska, Washington, Michigan State, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Kansas, Texas A&M, Iowa, Notre Dame, and Illinois were among the many heading to the Main South campus.
More will return this spring.
“I know Georgia will be back again, Notre Dame, and Wisconsin,” Purcell stated. “I visited those schools recently; that’s all I know right now.”
Just coming back from spending time with the Badgers, Purcell is heading to ACC grounds next.
“I am going to North Carolina on Tuesday,” Purcell said. “We are trying to get in a visit every week.”
Previewing the Tar Heels stop, Purcell shared, “I’m interested in them. I went to a camp there last summer; I loved it there. Their campus is really nice, as is everything as a whole there. I did their elite camp. I wanted to go back. With coach (Bill) Belichick there now, I want to see how they run things with the coaching changes.”
Asked what is important to learn and/or experience during recruiting visits, Purcell added, “The biggest thing, every university will have nice facilities, the biggest thing are the coaches. I will be with them and in their culture. I want to see how they interact with me, and any tension I may get. Seeing them practice, I want to see how they do everything, and I want to see their culture.”
More visits are coming up for Purcell.
“After North Carolina we are going to Nebraska, Indiana, Ole Miss, Texas, and Texas A&M,” Purcell said. “We will go to others. We are supposed to get down to Florida, I am trying to get to Auburn, and we may go to Miami.”
Purcell broke down the importance for him visiting the Cornhuskers, Hoosiers, and Rebels in the coming weeks.
Nebraska: “They are the earliest school that was really interested in me. They came to see me throw a couple of times; them showing interest in me is there. I went to a camp there, that’s when they offered me. Ever since then, I’ve been calling them weekly. They’ve been showing a lot of attention. I am excited to get back there.”
Indiana: “They came out to watch me throw, that’s when they offered me. Coach Tino Sunseri left, their new QB coach came to see me throw. I have visited their school twice. It should be fun. My parents went there; I will keep them in my loop.”
Ole Miss: “That was my first offer, them and UAB. I’ve had connections there. I have thrown a handful of times with (QB) Jaxson Dart. Where I am from, a lot of my friends from high school go there. We haven’t been there in over a year; they’ve come to see me two or three times at my high school. I am excited to get back down there.”
Alabama and Notre Dame are programs showing interest. The Crimson Tide may see Purcell on campus this summer.
“We were going to go to Alabama, but we rescheduled the visit,” Purcell shared. “I think I will go there for a camp and throw privately for them.”
Quarterback positions quickly fill up in the recruiting process, the spring visits are key for Purcell in his process.
“I am going to these schools, they are my top ones,” Purcell said. “Once I am through this cycle of visits, I will know where I stand and then I will narrow it down. I want to go to a bigger school that offers a very good education and is somewhere I can fit in.”
