If recruiting rankings and Division-I offers connect to mean anything, Mater Dei High School’s wide receiver Osiris St. Brown is one of the best in the 2017 class. If “star power” and scholarships on the doorstep are overrated, Brown has the stats after playing in one of the country’s toughest conferences in the nation (Trinity League) to add to his resume keeping doubters quite.
Stanford was one of 20-plus schools to come after Brown. The now- 6’2”, 188 pound, target worked his way into national notoriety after burning opposing southern California defenses for 43 receptions covering 884 yards with 12 scores during his junior season. The list of schools wanting Brown are impressive with Notre Dame, Oregon, Arizona State, Utah, Washington, Boise State, USC, Miami, Northwestern, Michigan State, Washington State, Vanderbilt, Colorado, UCLA, Kentucky, Michigan, Texas Tech, Illinois, and Cal among the many.
Brown put an end to his recruiting process on Friday with a tweet on Twitter reading, “40 year decision #FearTheFarm #CardClass17” followed by a statement:
When Brown committed to Stanford, he became the sixth member of the beginnings of what could be a very-very strong class. In a Recruiting News Guru stylized interview, I sat down with Brown after his commitment to get the inside scoop on how everything went down.
Interview
Osiris, let’s get to it. What influenced you to commit to Stanford on Friday?
“I was wanting to get it off my chest. Stanford has been there for a while at the top of my list. They are a top school in education and football. During the season I wanted to focus on my team and our season not on recruiting.”
Who did you commit to and how did the commitment take place?
“After I went up to Stanford my last time, I’ve been thinking about Stanford a lot. I came back home then me and my family went on vacation a week ago. We started talking about me committing. We came to a decision that Stanford would be my best school. I went with my gut. I called Coach (Mike) Bloomgren (offensive coordinator) and then Coach (David) Shaw (head coach) to tell them I was committing. They were all very excited.”
You said the coaches were excited, what all did they say when you committed?
“They were talking about how with me and the other commits like David Mills (QB), this could be the best recruiting class they have ever had.”
Just before you made that call how did you feel?
“I wasn’t really nervous. I wasn’t nervous then but before I made my decision, I was nervous then. Once I decided what I was going to do, I was relieved. I wanted to get it off my chest.”
Will you take any of your other official visits this fall other than to Stanford?
“No. I’m just going to Stanford.”
Are you going to help recruit players to join you at Stanford?
“Yes. I’m going to try. There are a couple of guys that have not committed yet that I know are high on Stanford. Darnay Holmes (Calabasas 5-star cornerback) is one of them. He is a great player. I don’t have anyone else in mind right now.”
I think Mater Dei is absolutely loaded with talent this year. How do you guys look going into fall practices?
“We look really good. Our offense and defense looks really good. I think our defense is 80 to 90 percent seniors. Our wide receivers are really good and athletic. With JT Daniels (2019) back there at quarterback, we will be very good this year.”
When do you guys get fall practices going?
“We’ve been doing a camp implementing some new schemes. We start on Monday with helmets and shoulder pads.”
What have you been working on this off-season to prepare for your senior year?
“I had a foot injury that held me back some this summer. Since then, I’ve been working on a lot of footwork drills before our camp. I’ve mostly been in the weight room this summer. I’m way bigger now. I added 10 to 15 pounds. We have a new wide receiver coach this year. I’m looking forward to working with him during camp.”
Is there at least one team on the schedule you are excited to play this year?
“Bosco (St. John Bosco).”
I knew that was coming. Osiris, thanks for your time today and congratulations on your commitment to Stanford.
“Thank you.”
