Since the college football recruiting portal opened at the end of the 2024 season, program-changing players have started matriculating their way to other teams. A steal for some lucky program will be landing former four-star Miami Hurricanes defensive end/outside linebacker Cyrus Moss.
A four-star out of Nevada’s Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas), Moss (6-5, 235) signed with Miami as part of the 2022 recruiting cycle. After a short stint with Portland State, the versatile defender is seeking that ideal situation.
Credited with action in five games with Miami, Moss spoke about the ACC experience, “Honestly, it was a dream come true for sure. Being out there in the bright lights, the atmosphere, and knowing you are playing big time football; I will never forget the first time I went on the field for a game. I was like wow; I am really playing. After going through all the practices, then on the field, and on TV, my thought was this is real. It was an awesome moment.”
The time with the Hurricanes and Vikings helped make Moss a more versatile player.
“At Miami, we had a couple of different defensive coordinators,” Moss stated. “We ended up running a mix between a 4-3 and a 3-4. At Portland State it was the same thing. We had a couple of defensive coordinators; one was switched at midseason. We ran a mix at Portland State; we ran multiple defenses.”

Moss continued speaking about how his talents were utilized on the field, “I was coming off the edge as a QB hunter and I would drop back into coverage. They had me switch it up. My job was to throw off the QB and the offense. I was giving different looks playing linebacker and dropping into coverage.”
The daily collegiate grind on the field with position coaches and in the weight room has taken Moss to another level.
“My strengths are my explosion, first step, and my football IQ,” Moss shared. “I have the ability to see the offense and know what they are doing. My technique and leverage are strengths. I have always been smaller, I’m getting up there now, but I’ve always had to have good technique to stand my ground and do what I do. Technique and leverage are definite strengths. Being able to play all over the place, being a hybrid, is a strength. I played safety and corner when I was younger.”
With two years to play two, Moss wants to use his versatility to help impact his next team.
“I am looking for something that can highlight my versatility,” Moss said. “I feel like I can play in a lot of different fronts. I’d like to contribute in all the ways that I can.”
On where he plays with his new squad, Moss added, “As a hybrid. I am gaining weight; I will probably transition more. I feel that I can play anywhere. I can be on the field on third down rushing the QB or in coverage, and I can hold up against the run. I am an all down player; I can play in all scenarios too.”
The recruiting process is wide open for Moss. Teams recruiting Moss include Oklahoma State, Boise State, UNLV, Texas A&M, Oregon State, UCLA, Colorado State, and top FCS programs like Idaho, North Dakota State, South Dakota, and Missouri State among others.
