Syracuse went into the fertile Florida recruiting grounds on Saturday landing Class of 2017 running back Markenzy Pierre out of the Orlando/Kissimmee area.
Pierre has been an explosive back for Liberty High School securing his spot as a “must-get” recruit during his junior campaign. The 5-11, 218 pound, talent rushed for 1,677 yards off 186 totes, with 19 touchdowns. He added 325 yards off 17 receptions in the passing game with four additional scores earning All-State Florida honors. Stats for the 2016 season have not been released on Pierre, but suffice to say he has not lost a step showing breakaway speed, vision, and strength once again leading his team in the ground attack.
Despite all of Pierre’s on the field productivity, and with 15 scholarship offers, the Florida talent was largely an under the radar recruit. On July 2, Pierre committed to Western Kentucky holding firm with the Hill Toppers. On Oct. 27, Pierre was given an offer by the ‘Cuse de-committing from WKU on Saturday and then verbally committing to the Orange.
The three-star picked Syracuse and WKU over other offers that included East Carolina, Memphis, Utah State, FIU, Kent State, Appalachian State, Georgia State, and Mercer, to name a few. His commitment went public via Twitter posting:
The Cuse has such an explosive summer securing 14 verbal commitments from June through August, the trail has been relatively quiet since defensive tackle Curtis Harper (McKeesport, PA) committed in early August and defensive end Jonathan Kingsley (Baltimore, MD) pledged on Sept. 25. The class is inching towards completion with 20 total commits.
Rivals ranks Syracuse’s class No. 46 in the nation while 247Sports rates the class No. 44 nationally, No. 10 overall in the ACC.
