KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Given the opportunity to show what he can do, Rod Gainey laid it on Florida defenses during his junior season. The standout tailback from Tampa Tech rolled for over 1,500 yards on the ground with 14 trips into the end zone and helped in the aerial attack posting three more scores. As Gainey prepares for another big fall with the Titans, visits have been taken to schools within his top eight.
Louisville, UCF, and Florida hosted Gainey this spring. Hanging at the Bounce House allowed Gainey to further connect with new Knights’ running backs coach Kam Martin.
“It was good,” Gainey said. “I talked to coach Gus (Malzahn), and I talked to their new running backs coach Kam Martin. Everything was good. The relationship is good there. I will keep going with that recruiting process.”
While in Gainesville, Gainey got to see the Gators’ spring game.
“The game was great,” Gainey shared. “They are looking good on defense. I didn’t get to talk to many of the coaches because of all the people and fans there, but everything was good.”
The Mountaineers will soon see the four-star on their Morgantown campus.
“I am excited because they are a school that has been recruiting me, I like coach Chad Scott (RB), and they are part of my top eight,” Gainey stated. “I have to get there to see how everything is.”
The new NCAA rule allowing unlimited visits may affect how Gainey plans out his future travel schedule.
“I have none set,” Gainey said. “I see the new rule, we get to pick how many official visits we want, that will open up my choices even more; I will get that planned out.”
Asked if the focus of his official visits will be the teams in his top eight, Gainey replied, “Yes, probably every single one I will go to.”
The possibility of taking more paid for trips will not slow down his plans on committing.
“I have a commitment coming soon, but I don’t have a date,” Gainey shared. “Probably in like a month I will have everything figured out.”
Gainey’s top eight released on Jan. 31 included Florida, Indiana, Louisville, Maryland, Mississippi State, Penn State, UCF, and West Virginia.
