The Tennessee Volunteers have a lot of work left on their 2016 recruiting class with 16 pledges but got a big jump start on 2017 when Indiana quarterback Hunter Johnson committed on Sunday.
Johnson, listed at 6’3”, 195 pounds, has all the tools to be a great quarterback but success on the high school gridiron has been hard to come by so far. The Brownsburg Bulldogs finished the 2014 season 3-7 with Johnson leading the way. The sophomore completed 122-of-226 pass attempts collecting 1,434 yards with 10 touchdowns against eight picks.
The lack of success on the field has not stopped college recruiters from drooling over Johnson’s skill set in the pocket. Some 20 schools have extended offers including Miami, Kentucky, Florida, North Carolina, Penn State, Northwestern, Purdue, Nebraska, Minnesota, Missouri, and Cincinnati.
The frontrunners for the No. 1 rated Class of 2017 quarterback was Tennessee, Notre Dame, and North Carolina State.
The recruiting process was not lost on Johnson. He was busy in the offseason visiting Oklahoma, Florida, Michigan, camped at Indiana, visited Stanford, North Carolina State, and Tennessee.
