SMU added another playmaking machine to their 2017 recruiting class on Monday when in-state athlete Tyler Page pledged to the Mustangs.
Page has been a highlight reel for Friendswood High School over the past two seasons as a do-everything kind of player in the Mustangs’ backfield. During his sophomore season, Page got a few snaps in under center behind senior Brandon Sargent completing 13 attempts for 152 yards with one touchdown. His explosiveness was seen on the ground covering 624 yards off 105 carries with 13 scores. He even caught one pass for 46. All stats just through six games.
Friendswood went from 8-4 in 2014 to 8-5 getting an extra game in the playoffs against 6A competition with Page as the starting quarterback. Through 13 games in 2015, Page completed 83 pass attempts for 1,165 yards with 12 scores. The 6’0”, 180 pound, speedster was nearly unstoppable in the run game adding 2,093 yards with 24 touchdowns to his resume. The Mustangs’ staff once again found a way to get him involved in the passing game in other ways with Page pulling in two passes for 30 yards with one score.
Page’s recruiting stock started to soar over the spring leading to 10 reported scholarship offers. The teams hoping to land Page included Virginia, Air Force, Citadel, Texas State, New Mexico, Dartmouth, Tulane, Army, and Kansas.
SMU offerd Page on April 4, leading to his commitment on Aug. 1. Page posted his announcement on Twitter reading, “I have committed to play football for SMU! Once a mustang always a mustang! #PonyUpTempo.”
The Mustangs now have 14 verbal commitments to their 2017 recruiting class. All 14 recruits hail from the Lone Star State.
