In the sleepy town of Sanger, Texas, just north of Denton, big things are brewing on the high school football field with Class of 2018 all-purpose back Dameon Moser. The 5-11, 170 pound, speedster has put together back-to-back solid campaigns for the Indians doing his best to pull a recruiting spotlight to the town of roughly 7,000 people. Fortunately for Moser, the hard work is starting to pay off punctuated by a successful visit to the University of Tulsa over the weekend.
Moser made a splash on the field during his sophomore season rushing for 672 yards off 95 carries with 14 touchdowns scored in 11 games played. Moser split even snaps with upperclassman Peyton Howard during the 2015 schedule and then became the featured back for the Indians in 2016 rushing for 998 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns off 165 totes. The 5-11, 170 pound, emerging talent took on a bigger role within the offense with the coaching staff working to get Moser out in space for one-on-one matchups against linebackers and safeties in the passing game. The plan worked seeing Moser pull down 45 passes for 472 yards with four more scores.
The recruiting process for Moser has been slow so far with Tulsa and UMass showing the bulk of the interest, but with appearances during the off-season to invite only camps, Nike, Rivals Three Stripe, and the Lone Star Classic, opportunities for next level coaches to learn more about the rising playmaker is just beginning.
On Saturday, Tulsa hosted Moser on an unofficial visit for a Junior Day event getting a first shot among college programs at impressing the Texas product. In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with Moser to see how the visit turned out.
Interview
Dameon, let’s set up the visit. Who went with you to Tulsa?
“My dad and uncle.”
When did the visit begin?
“It started at about 10:30 Saturday morning. We got there about an hour early.”
What all did you do during the visit?
“I watched them practice, I tried on their really nice jerseys, and went on a campus tour.”
How did the visit go overall?
“It was a really good visit. I would like to go back up there again.”
Which coaches did you meet with during the visit?
“I met with their running backs coach, Coach (Justin) Hill.”
What did Coach Hill talk about with you?
“Coach Hill told us about the fact they have a running back committed already. They are going to try to take two running backs this year even though they normally only take one.”
Did Coach Hill tell you what style of running back they are looking for with the second potential scholarship slot?
“Someone else asked that same question. He said what they do, they do not care about size or style. They are basically looking for the best player possible that fits their scheme.”
Did the coaching staff show you any reel on how they use their running backs within the offense?
“We did watch a highlight film of the overall team, but not just running backs. They had a really good highlight film. In our individual group, Coach Hill explained to me that they had two backs go over 1,400 yards last year (James Flanders – 1,661 yards and D’Angelo Brewer – 1,461 yards). Combined they had over 3,000 rushing yards between them.”
Do you see yourself fitting in with the team’s offense after the visit?
“Yeah, I really did. I saw the backs work on the practice field. Coach Hill had some guys come in and talk to us about the program. They were very welcoming and accepting, answering all of our questions and talking about the grind they go through.”
Earlier you mentioned you tour some of the areas of the campus and facilities? What all did you see?
“We toured the entire campus on a bus. The lady conducting the tour pointed out everything to us. We also went into the weight room. They have a really nice weight room.”
What was your overall impression of the campus and facilities?
“I really – it was very impressive. I was not expecting it to be that nice.”
Do plan to visit the school again, if so, when?
“No, not now. Coach Hill said that he would come visit me this spring. I want to make a camp or two at Tulsa during the summer.”
Do you have another visit scheduled?
“I talked to the recruiting coordinator at UMass, Coach (Charles) Walker. He said he had a date he wanted me to come out for a visit but I have the ACT that day. He said to let him know in advance and I can come by any time.”
Since we last spoke do you have any new recruiting interest?
“I’ve had a couple of coaches follow me on Twitter.”
From our last conversation I know track was just getting going for you, any new news on the track?
“I was invited to the Texas Relays.”
Which events?
“The 4×1 and 4×2.”
Nice. Congrats.
“Thank you.”
How does the rest of your week look?
“This coming week I have a track meet, the Rivals Three Stripe camp, and the Texas Relays.”
Dameon, good luck with your track events and the camp, and thanks for your time today.
“Thank you.”
