Texas A&M started the 2023 season with a 4-1 record; however, the Aggies were unable to make any noise the rest of the year finishing 7-6. Due to the underwhelming performance, head coach Jimbo Fisher was paid a large sum to leave the program and was replaced by former Duke head coach Mike Elko to lead the preseason ranked No. 20 Aggies. With just 12 victories over the last two seasons, Elko has his hands full to make Texas A&M a contender in the SEC.
On offense, the Aggies scored 32.8 points per game in 2023, but have a new offensive coordinator, Collin Klein, who joins the staff from Kansas State to help lead the charge in 2024. Quarterback Connor Weigman returns for his junior season after an injury limited him to just 3.5 games last season. The three-headed monster of Noah Thomas, Moose Muhammad, and Jahdae Walker at wide receiver will make plays all over the field as they are a very dangerous receiving corp. Trey Zuhn and Chase Bisontis will lead the offensive line at the tackle position.
Defensively, Texas A&M was Jekyll and Hyde a year ago as they gave up 21.3 points a game and were 7-1 when they gave up 22 points or fewer to opponents but 0-5 when giving up more.
The front seven will be led by defensive linemen Shemar Turner and Nic Scourton, a Purdue transfer; both are future NFL draft picks. Sophomore linebacker Taurean York will be looking to put up another impressive performance after racking up 74 total tackles and three sacks during his freshman campaign. Safety Bryce Anderson is the star in the secondary after posting 55 total tackles, 1.5 sacks, and one interception a year ago.
The season kicks off Saturday, August 31, with a bang as Texas A&M hosts Notre Dame in a primetime matchup. On Sept. 7, the Aggies will host McNeese State before traveling to Florida to open conference play on Sept. 14.
Texas A&M will then host Bowling Green on Sept. 21 in preparation for a trip to Dallas to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks in “Jerry’s World” on Sept. 28. One of the biggest conference games of the year will be on Oct. 5 when the Missouri Tigers come to College Station to face off against the Aggies.
After their first bye week, Texas A&M travels to Mississippi State looking for their second consecutive victory over the Bulldogs. The Aggies close out October by hosting LSU on the 26th looking to win their fourth straight at home over the Tigers.
Texas A&M then battles South Carolina on Nov. 2 before their second bye week of the season. The final non-conference game of the season will be on Nov. 16 as the Aggies host New Mexico State. The final road trip of the season will be on Nov. 23 with the Aggies heading to Auburn. The regular season concludes on Nov. 30 as the Aggies host in-state rival, and one of the newest members of the SEC, the Texas Longhorns for a highly anticipated matchup.
The Aggies have a favorable schedule in 2024 as they avoid Alabama, Georgia, and Oklahoma and their four biggest games, Notre Dame, LSU, Missouri, and Texas, are all in the friendly confines of Kyle Field. Look for Texas A&M to make some noise in the SEC and make a decent bowl game at the end of the season.
Season Prediction: 8-4
