Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin straightened out any confusion under center entering the 2015 college football season naming sophomore quarterback Kyle Allen the Aggies’ starter on Monday.
Allen started the final five games of the 2014 season making waves in his second start beating No. 3 Auburn on the road 41-38. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native had his highest production of the regular season against the Tigers tossing four touchdowns against one pick compiling 277 yards in the air. Allen turned in a SEC-high QBR of 86.7 over the final five games of the season.
Many believed Allen would be named the starter for the Aggies, especially after his Autozone Liberty Bowl MVP performance against West Virginia. He completed 22-of-35 passes for 294 yards with four touchdowns against one interception in a 45-37 win over the Mountaineers. Allen finished the 2014 season with a 3-2 record tossing 16 touchdowns against seven interceptions with 1,322 passing yards.
Allen beat out true freshman Kyler Murray and Blinn junior college transfer Jake Hubenak for the starting spot. 2014 regular season starter Kenny Hill lost his job to Allen after a 59-0 loss to Alabama on the road. In the offseason Hill transferred to TCU.
Texas A&M opens the season against No. 13 Arizona State on Sept. 5 in Houston playing in the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff game in NRG Stadium.
