Texas A&M Secures Bishop Gorman Class of 2017 QB Tate Martell
Written by Ryan Wright
Promise of the future is coming to College Station, the 12th Man and head coach Kevin Sumlin will just have to wait two years for him to arrive after Tate Martell verbally committed to the Aggies on Thursday.
The diverse offense that Sumlin can put to use with a dual-threat under center opens up a world of offensive opportunities. Sumlin has a true pocket passer in sophomore Kyle Allen but signed Texas high school legend Kyler Murray to the 2015 recruiting class. Murray might be a bit undersized at 5’11”, 185 pounds, but he was unstoppable in high school winning three consecutive state championships without losing a game. During his senior year he passed for 4,715 yards with 54 touchdowns and ran for another 1,498 yards with 24 additional scores.
Martell, roughly the same size as Murray at 5’10”, 190, has all of the same type of hype behind him after committing to the University of Washington while still in middle school and taking over as Bishop Gorman’s starting quarterback as a sophomore leading the Gales to a 15-0 record that included a Nevada state and national championship. After splitting early snaps with senior Danny Hong, Martell passed for 2,537 yards with 40 touchdowns against just two picks. He also rushed for 433 yards with five scores but was not needed to provide the yards on the ground with Russell Booze picking up 1,791 yards and 22 touchdowns last season.
The Aggies pulled Martell away from finalist Alabama, USC, Washington, and Michigan. The No. 1 ranked Class of 2017 quarterback visited College Station over the summer openly talking about how much he loved the city and the program.
Martell is the first 2017 recruit to commit to the Aggies.
