Halfway between El Paso and Abilene in the little town of Wink, Kanon Gibson has become a star for the Wildcats. As a quarterback, Gibson has thrown for 900 yards and 10 touchdowns while rushing for 600 yards and eight touchdowns. As a free safety, Kanon has registered 75 tackles. All that athleticism is drawing recruiting attention to the town of less than 1,000.
This 6’1”, 185-pound, playmaker possesses a unique ability to extend plays on offense by using his legs and deploying his strong and accurate arm. On defense, Gibson plays downhill and uses his athleticism and strength to make tackles all over the field.
In an exclusive Recruiting News Guru interview, I caught up with Kanon to talk about his junior season and get an update on his recruiting process.
Interview
Kanon, how is your junior season going thus far?
We lost a couple of early games but we’re hitting our stride now.
What has been your most memorable moment and why?
During the second game of the year, our offense started to hit our stride and now we average over 40 points a game.
What are your strengths on the football field?
I’m very mobile and I have a strong arm. I know where the ball needs to go on each play to get a big play. I’m very aware.
What kind of offense does your team run?
We’ve been running a lot of Spread lately.
How do your skills fit into this offensive scheme?
I have a quick release. I let my receivers make plays in open space.
What do you like most about playing quarterback?
The leadership aspect that comes with it. You’re in control of the offense.
Would you consider yourself a dual-threat or pro-style quarterback?
Definitely dual-threat.
Is there an NFL player that you try to model your game after?
Dak Prescott.
What area of your game have you seen the most improvement since the start of the season?
Throwing the ball on throws from 10 to 20 yards away.
What do you like most about playing free safety?
My coaches trust me to make a play and don’t put me in a specific spot.
How do your skills fit into your team’s defensive scheme?
I’m a downhill player. I like to stop the run.
Did you attend any camps this past summer?
Texas Tech, Baylor, Texas-Permian Basin, Midwestern, and Angelo State were among my favorites of the 20 camps I went to.
What was your favorite camp and why?
Texas Tech, because of their coaching staff.
Are you receiving interest from any schools?
Texas Tech, Texas-Permian Basin, Abilene Christian and several others.
What is your GPA?
3.9.
Do you have a favorite quote or Bible verse?
Always give thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Thank you for your time today and good luck the rest of the season.
Thank you, sir.
