The push seems to be on among DeSoto High School Class of 2017 talents to get the recruiting process over as soon as possible and before the 2016 season begins. On Wednesday a fourth member of the Eagles football team committed to a Division-I program when Xavier Newman pledged to the Texas Longhorns.
The Eagles were loaded with talent during the 2015 season but struggled at times to put all the abilities together ending the season 6-6. DeSoto’s two-game run into the Texas (UIL) playoffs gave college recruiters extra time to help identify the underclassmen on the roster with next level talent and Newman was one of the many.
Newman, listed at 6’4”, 285 pounds, played his way into being a 3-star recruit in recruiting rankings but more importantly was in the neighborhood of 20 scholarship offers by the time he committed to in-state power Texas. Among the teams to offer included Kansas State, Arizona State, North Carolina, Texas A&M, Missouri, Texas Tech, Colorado, Minnesota, and Mississippi State.
The Longhorns offered on April 8 and setup the closing meeting on April 16 when Newman visited the Austin campus. Newman posted a statement via Twitter making the announcement official:
Newman added, “IT’S [sic] OFFICIAL!! BLESSED.”
Other DeSoto Eagles to verbally commit to a D-I program includes offensive lineman Edward Ingram to LSU, offensive lineman Hyrin White to Missouri, and wide receiver K.D. Nixon to Tennessee.
The Longhorns now have six verbal commitments to their 2017 recruiting class highlighted by 4-star recruits Lagaryonn Carson, Sam Ehlinger, and Damion Miller.
