Texas Tech Sneaks 3-Star DT Nick McCann out of Arkansas
Written by Ryan Wright
The Red Raiders have not ventured outside the state of Texas much to build their 2016 recruiting class but snuck a hidden gem out of the state of Arkansas on Tuesday landing a verbal commitment from Texarkana defensive tackle Nick McCann.
McCann, 6’2”, 290 pounds, jumped onto the recruiting scene during the offseason by way of the college camp circuit wowing coaching staffs at Arkansas, Texas A&M, Baylor, and TCU. Offers have rolled in from Oklahoma State, Baylor, SMU, Texas State, Texas-San Antonio, Central Arkansas, Tulsa, and Kansas but perhaps the two biggest offers not to come yet have been from Arkansas and Texas A&M.
After traveling to College Station to show the Aggies his skill set and interest in the program, McCann quickly let it be known he was very high on A&M. Waiting for other offers to come down the pipeline was not in the cards for McCann or other potential suitors.
The announcement was made official when Nick went on Twitter posting, “Well I just committed to Texas Tech. #GunsUp.”
McCann helped Texarkana High School to a 5-7 overall record playing a mixed early season schedule of Texas and Louisiana high school teams before advancing to the second round of the Arkansas High School State Playoffs.
Texas Tech now has 21 verbal commitments with five of those commits coming from outside the Lone Star State. Tech has verbal commitments from DT Mychealon Thomas (Butler County C.C., Kansas), WR DeQuan Bowman (Hutchinson C.C., Kansas), LB Johnathan Picone (Madeville, LA), DE Noah Jones, Southmoore, OK), and McCann.
