While Texas’ 2016 recruiting class has a long way to go before being filled with just nine commitments, the 2017 class got a big boost on Wednesday and Thursday with the addition of tight end Major Tennison and defensive end LaGaryonn Carson.
Tennison jumped on the recruiting map as a sophomore pulling down 20 passes for 379 yards with five touchdowns. Texas Tech was the first school to offer the 6’4”, 245 pound, Bullard High School talent but after making the offseason camp rounds he picked up an offer from Oklahoma State, SMU, and the Longhorns on Oct. 14, the same day the junior committed.
The addition of Liberty-Eylau’s Lagaryonn Carson is a big win for Charlie Strong and his staff. Carson is a raw powerful monster lining up at defensive end. The 6’4”, 260 pound, star right now uses brute strength and his speed to make plays coming up with 101 tackles, 32 tackles for a loss, and 18 sacks during his sophomore season. He already plays above his grade classification with the potential to be a 5-star recruit when all is said and done. His potential with a little technique is scary good.
Considering Carson’s abilities, recruiting has started off slow with nine reported scholarships extended. Teams that have offers on the table for the Texarkana product include Alabama, Arkansas, Baylor, Oklahoma, SMU, North Texas, Tennessee, and Texas A&M.
The Longhorns’ 2017 class has four commits, all from the state of Texas. The timing of the verbal commitments by Tennison and Carson could be coincidental but come off the heels of the Longhorns big win over Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry.
