When it comes to accolades and recognition for success on the field, it is hard to beat what Luke Carney has already accomplished at Dallas Christian (Mesquite, Texas). The Class of 2025 prospect has brought back-to-back TAPPS state championships home with a long list of honors that includes being named first team All-State and is the TAPPS returning Offensive Player of the Year. The dual threat has racked up the stats on the way to a 26-2 record as a varsity starter and college teams are now placing scholarship opportunities in Carney’s hands wanting the same piece of magic on their roster.

Carney did not hold back at any point during his sophomore campaign throwing for 2,409 yards with 31 touchdowns while rushing for 918 yards putting five more scores on the board.

“In our offense, we are in a lot of 11-(personnel); that is mainly what we run,” Carney said. “We are a balanced offense, half run and half pass. We are very efficient, that is what to expect from us this year.”

While keeping his 4.6 speed in the 40-yard dash, Carney (6-2, 195) bulked up this offseason.

“This offseason I put on 25 to 30 pounds; I was in the weight room a lot,” Carney stated. “I focused on my mechanics and incorporating my hips and lower body into my throw to generate more velocity.”

Carney continued, “I improved on my pre- and post-snap reads; I have been more decisive. My understanding of the game is a lot better than last year.”

Asked what he wants to showcase this season after all the hard work in the spring and summer months, Carney replied: “I want to show my overall improvement, my accuracy, velocity, my toughness, my running ability, and anticipation.”

Arizona, Georgia Tech, Marshall, Toledo, and Western Michigan have offered the three-star with interest coming in from Duke, South Florida, and Tulsa among others. Some of those teams may see Carney this fall.

“I am planning on going to Duke, USF, and I want to make a Marshall game this year; they have offered me,” Carney shared. “Those three are on the schedule.”

A strong rapport with Blue Devils’ offensive coordinator/QB coach Kevin Johns has Carney ready to learn more about Duke.

“Our relationship is really good,” Carney said. “I have been talking to their QB coach for a while. I threw for him at their camp and at my school. We are in regular communication. It is going really well.”

South Florida OC/QB coach Joel Gordon’s background developing quarterbacks has Carney’s attention.

“Coach Gordon, I have been talking to him for the past couple of weeks,” Carney stated. “He coached Brock Purdy (49ers) at Iowa State; I am a big fan of his. It has been great talking to him.”

Herd offensive coordinator/quarterback coach Clint Trickett is receiving some help recruiting Carney via head coach Charles Huff.

“I love coach Huff, their head coach,” Carney shared. “It was great seeing their facilities and their stadium during the summer for their camp.”

A QB Coach’s Perspective

Danny Hernandez: “I absolutely love the work and attention to detail that Luke has shown this offseason. I challenged him with several things, and he’s tackled them head on. I’m not surprised though because this is honestly how he is in everything he does. I think Luke will have a huge Junior season and I wish him nothing but health and success.”

The Chargers start their 2023 season on Friday welcoming Bishop Dunne.
