A June 21 commitment by four-star quarterback Tavien St. Clair (Bellefontaine) could end up changing the fate of another blueblood program. The Buckeyes were actively recruiting two of the best Class of 2025 gunslingers in the nation, both backyard prospects. Clair committed, but a spot does remain open for Findlay High School four-star Ryan Montgomery (6-3, 215) in Columbus. For Montgomery, there is a world of possibilities ahead which includes two programs in the Sunshine State and one of the Buckeyes’ biggest rivals.
College programs made the town of Findlay a hot spot this spring with representatives from Michigan, Ohio State, Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, LSU, and USC among others making an appearance. Penn State went that next step dropping in by helicopter.
As the summer months took over, Montgomery headed to Columbus to sling it for OSU.
“It was more of a private workout with coach (Corey) Dennis (QB),” Montgomery said. “There were a few other quarterbacks that were there, high profile guys. I feel I did well.”
Montgomery added, “I got to talk to coach Dennis. This past Wednesday, we had a team 7-on-7 camp there so I was able to talk to coach (Ryan) Day after. It was a good conversation because they just got their ’25, Tavien St. Clair. I’m super excited for him. He’s a great guy. We have a good relationship. They said they still really do want me, and they will take two if they need to. That option is still open there for me, but we’ll see.”
Another stop this summer was made in Ann Arbor.
“Michigan was great. I was one-on-one with coach (Kirk) Campbell (QB),” Montgomery shared. “That was really good. They kind of put me through their route tree, you could say. I thought I did well there too.”
Montgomery spoke about the conversations held with the Wolverines’ coaching staff, “They were reiterating that I am a priority guy for them, and that they will keep recruiting me. I will hit up a Michigan game this fall; 100 percent, no brainer. I will keep building that relationship and keep learning about them.”
Checking in on his overall recruitment, the four-star shared which teams are making the most contact.
“Michigan, Florida, and Miami, those three are probably the ones I am in contact with the most right now,” Montgomery stated.
Asked if there is a chance to visit the Gators and/or the Hurricanes, Montgomery replied, “Definitely. I would definitely like to visit. I will get to a Florida game this fall; I am definitely looking at a Miami game as well.”
Insight to the relationship with Florida’s coaches was provided, “I’m on the phone the most with coach (Ryan) O’Hara right now; their QB coach, QB analyst. I’ve probably done the most Zoom calls with him than anyone else, any other coach. I think that kind of speaks for itself, our relationship with each other, and how my recruiting with them is going.”
The relationship out of South Florida is building.
“I’ve been talking to coach (Shannon) Dawson (OC/QB) the most,” Montgomery shared. “I did a Zoom call with him this past week. I’m on the phone with him once a week; that relationship keeps getting stronger.”
The push for rising junior quarterbacks to commit early has seemingly never been any more pressure filled. With 2025 guys already committing, Montgomery was asked what’s he’s looking for in a next level fit.
“The relationship is one of the biggest things for me, who you are going to surround yourself with for the next four to five years,” Montgomery said. “They will be your coach, but they are also almost like a second dad. You are going to be with that position coach for the next four to five years daily and over countless hours. Also, the style of offense is important to me and how that translates to the NFL; that is my end goal, that is my dream. The culture of the school is big for me and academics as well.”
Montgomery is credited with 29 offers thus far which includes teams like Georgia, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Tennessee, and North Carolina.
