In football, there really is no answer for a true cover corner other than hopes and prayers. Making it exceedingly difficult, put a big corner out there who is ready to shut down the opposition’s top receiver game after game and play after play. Put it all together, you have rising Class of 2019 talent Javin Wright.
Wright worked his way up recruiting boards during the 2017 season after coming up with 41 tackles, 29 solo, two tackles for a loss, seven passes broken up, and one interception in just eight games played. The standout stat line for Hamilton High School’s corner catches attention but what further draws college coaches’ eye is the physical presence. Wright’s mindset is to be the best, and the play on the field supports his determination. His 6-3, 190-pound, frame coupled with his 4.55 speed makes it a reality.
Despite Wright’s three-star status, the Chandler (AZ) area product is still flying under the radar, all things considered. Two offers are on the table from Arizona and Air Force with other top schools such as Arizona State, Utah, Oregon, and Boise State, among others, taking a closer look. In a Recruiting News Guru stylized interview, I sat down with Wright to learn more about his game and recruiting process.
Interview
Javin, you had a standout junior season with Hamilton. Of all the games you played, which game was your best last season, and why do you consider that your best game?
“By far the Boulder Creek game. That game was at the beginning of the season, I was fresh and focused. It was a physical game. I know their receivers well. I prepared really well for them.”
From watching your film, it looked like you played both corner and safety last year and/or were locked on with the opposition’s top receiver? Correct me if I am wrong, did you play corner depending on the team you were playing?
“Actually, I played corner the whole time – I did take some snaps at safety but I primarily played corner. It was my job to lock onto their best receiver the whole game. I might play some safety this year.”
Are you excited about the possibility of playing more safety this year?
“I think it will come easy to me.”
Between corner and safety, which do you like better?
“I like corner better. You know what you have to do at corner. Whether you are in man coverage or Cover 2, you know what you have to do. At safety, you are free roam and play off the ball.”
Was there a receiver you faced last year that challenged you?
“D’Shayne James (6-2, 200 – Perry HS) was a fun challenge. It was easy for me to match up with him. We are similar in height and weight. That was a good match up.”
How did that challenge make you a better defender?
“It made me focus more. I had to make sure to stay on my technique. With James, you cannot take plays off against him.”
When the season was over, which areas of your game saw the most improvement?
“My technique improved a lot. I relied more on my technique last year. I was more confident in myself. Now, I feel I can go against anyone. I am bigger, stronger, and more confident in what I can do on the field.”
What do you consider the strengths of your game?
“I am really good at taking away one receiver. If you have a No. 1 receiver, I will take him out. I am intelligent. I will not give a quarterback a simple pre-snap read. My run defense is a strength too. I am good at making plays.”
What are you working on this offseason?
“I am working on getting faster. At the Nike Opening (LA), I ran a 4.59. I want a 4.4. I am also trying to keep my weight up to 190.”
*The Nike Opening in LA saw slower times across the board for all competitors
What is the best 40-yard dash time you’ve posted?
“4.55.”
I saw you perform at the Nike camp. It looked like you did well. In your own words, how did the Nike camp go for you?
“It was good. I competed and got a lot of reps.”
What other camps might you attend this spring or summer?
“I am planning on going to some college camps, but I have not planned them out yet. Visits to Cal.
Which schools are showing recruiting interest in you but have not offered yet?
“Georgia, Texas, Washington, Cal, UCLA, and Arizona State.”
How many offers do you have now?
“I have offers from Arizona and Air Force.”
Have you started taking unofficial visit yet?
“Yes. I took a recent unofficial to USC. That was a nice visit.”
What all did you do during your USC trip?
“I met most of the coaches, walked around campus, saw the facilities, and put myself on the map.”
How is everything going in the classroom?
“I have a 3.3 GPA.”
Have you taken the ACT and/or SAT yet?
“No. Not yet.”
Last question. When game day comes around, do you have any pre-game rituals that you have to do?
“I pray. That is the only thing I do that is extraordinary.”
Javin, thanks for your time today and good luck with the rest of your offseason workouts.
“Thank you.”
