College football is all about the right talent fitting into the right scheme with the right coaches guiding the course to gridiron glory. Talking the X’s and O’s is the easy part, identifying, recruiting, and then signing said talent is the hard part. With 130 Division I football teams, along with every other D-II program out there, securing a signed National Letter of Intent on Signing Day is a big event for program and recruit.
With talent evaluations ongoing by recruiting services right up until National Signing Day, the recruiting rankings are constantly influx. One of the steady measures, the number of top players on the board. There are now 362 players rated as four-star or better, 34 of those scouted as five-star prospects. With college wins on the line, and big money in the form of bonuses for high ranking recruiting classes, everything with recruiting is constantly shifting right up until the pen hits the paper on the Letter of Intent and the ink dries.
In the week leading up to NSD, there was mass ranking movement among uncommitted players. For example, four-star safety Terrion Arnold jumped from the 106th ranked player in the country to No. 50; it will be interesting to see which team he signs with and how that might impact the final recruiting rankings. Another player that saw a significant jump over the same timeframe was Georgia linebacker Trevin Wallace, from No. 230 to No. 140. Going the other way, Armwood athlete Charles Montgomery was a four-star rated at No. 267 and was dropped to a three-star now ranked No. 444.
With just a few hours left until the mayhem begins, all eyes will be on these 12 highly coveted players watching to see which teams receive their faxed Letters of Intent.
