As the modern game of college football continues to further embrace spreading out defenders and letting receivers go vertical, the importance of having a quarterback who can sling it downfield and make all the throws has never been higher. As the 2019 season wraps up the postseason, there are highly regarded quarterbacks on the market looking for a new home, the kind of quarterbacks that can change the fortunes of a program for years to come; the likes of Joe Burrow who left Ohio State transferring to LSU.
The transfer portal can open at any time and a player can be off the market in hours. If a program is having little to no luck bringing in a Class of 2020 talent or are in need of a quick fix with veteran experience, transfers may solve the problem. Some of the prominent moves to happen already includes former four-star dual-threat Joey Gatewood leaving Auburn for Kentucky, four-star Jack Sears leaving USC for San Diego State, and starting South Carolina field general Jake Bentley heading west for Utah.
Other notable moves, Austin Kirksey leaving Nevada for Georgia and Kaiden Bennett leaving Boise State heading to Nevada. Two former Kansas State QBs are still looking for a home, Chris Herron and John Holcombe, same for two former Wake Forest players, Jamie Newman and Tayvon Bowers. Nick Starkel will bring starting experience with him wherever he may land from two different SEC programs, Texas A&M and Arkansas.
KJ Costello is one of the more intriguing quarterbacks out there. The senior transfer had a standout sophomore season with Stanford hitting 65 percent of his passes for 3,540 yards with 29 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. The same for former Florida dual-threat Feleipe Franks. Franks had the look of turning the corner during his sophomore season completing 58 percent of his passes covering 2,457 yards with 24 scores but lost his starting spot in 2019. Former TCU quarterback, Justin Rogers, a Class of 2018 recruit, will have three to play three, a great bonus for the right coaching staff.
Which transferring quarterback will find the perfect fit this time around helping elevate the play of his new team to conference title contender and a possible College Football Playoff berth?
