Most sophomores suiting up on the gridiron are not counted upon in a key role for a given season, but that was not the case for Jakob Galloway. The 5-10, 220-pound, athlete was a standout at running back and linebacker for Banning High School a year ago. Going against Division-I California competition, Galloway carried the rock 39 times for 309 yards with six touchdowns and pulled down five passes for 42 more yards to keep the chains moving. On defense he put an end to 32 plays with five tackles for a loss and three pass breakups playing outside linebacker for the Pilots aiding in the team’s 7-5 season. The display of talent on the field has already brought in offers from San Jose State and Utah thus far.
In an RNG exclusive interview, Galloway sat down covering his growing skills on the field with an update on his offseason workouts.
Interview
Jakob, there is no quit when the ball is in your hands. When the lights come on for a game on Friday night, what gets you hyped and motivated to play at such a high level?
“The main thing is being focused, ready to play and showing everyone what I got.”
Besides being a hard runner, what do you feel are the other traits to your game on offense that makes you so dangerous?
“My linemen help me out. For me personally, it is my field vision, I see a lot, and I know when to cut and I hit the right hole.”
How was the OC getting the ball into your hands last season?
“On outside and inside zone plays and some screens here and there.”
That hard-nosed mentality you have fits you well on defense as an outside linebacker. How did that part of your season turn out in 2019?
“I did pretty good on defense. It was easier for me.”
Since the season ended, what have you been working on with your overall game?
“We didn’t get to do much; I’ve been doing a lot of working out. I have been working on my speed, agility, ladders, and running miles when I can.”
Going with that, what has been your daily routine to stay in football shape?
“I have a workout list; I bench, do squats, and I am doing all that at home. I do push-ups, sit ups and then football stuff.”
Where all will you line up on the field next season?
“At running back, linebacker, and I may play some receiver next season.”
If the college camp season happens, are there any camps you may attend?
“My head coach is trying to set me up with some, we’ll wait and see what happens.”
Going into recruiting, which schools are showing interest but have not offered yet?
“Cal-Berkeley. I talked to them last week, it went well.”
How many offers do you have?
“Two; Fresno State and Utah.”
That’s great. What was it like getting that first offer?
“I was excited to get my first offer from Fresno State. I had been dreaming about it; it was a goal of mine.”
Last question for you, my virus buster. What have you been doing for fun during this time for fun?
“Right now I am just trying to get together with friends when I can and I have been hanging out with the family watching movies and playing video games.”
Jakob, thanks for your time today and good luck with the rest of your offseason workouts.
“Thank you.”
