The stats back up the gunslinger mentality Quinn Murphy takes when stepping foot on the Texas gridiron. The 2026 QB sliced through defenses a year ago and is set to bypass his own highwater mark this fall spinning it for Regents School of Austin.
The Knights got 2,406 passing yards and 33 touchdowns at a 67 percent clip last fall from Murphy (6-3, 187). Through five games this season, Murphy has spun it at a 70 percent rate covering 1,398 yards with 24 scores and has rushed two into the end zone.
“The season is going really well,” Murphy said. “We are 4-1 right now. We lost to the best team in the private school ranks in Texas (St. Thomas Catholic 51-41). We have a lot of great seniors, and a lot of great leaders; I think we have a really good shot at winning state this year.”
Running the Knights’ Spread offensive attack, Murphy spoke about his focus in the pocket.
“I’m trying to focus in on my accuracy,” Murphy stated. “The more I watch college football, the more I see how important it is to be accurate. I’ve been focused on my arm and making the best throw.”
As his skills evolve, Murphy was asked, has there been a snap this season where you surprised yourself with the play you made as part of your progression as a QB?
“Yes,” Murphy replied. “This year, we played the team we lost to, they have the most D-I recruits since when Deion Sanders left with Shedeur. They have the most talented team since then this season. On our third offensive snap, I threw a pass in the corner of the end zone, it was a six-to-10-inch window. That is when I realized the firepower of our offense.
“The throw was good, and we have a sophomore receiver who is able to get open against top DBs in our state. That was a stepping point for our team this year.”
Action along the recruiting trail was updated.
“I just picked up my 9th offer after my second game of the year from Baylor,” Murphy shared. “I went there to see a game; I love the staff there. I am hoping to pick up a few more offers as the season goes on.”
The next wave of offers is loading up in the queue.
“I am receiving interest mostly from SEC schools,” Murphy said. “I am going to Ole Miss this weekend to see them play Arkansas. Hopefully I will be attending a Florida game later this season. There are two other schools showing interest, LSU and Tennessee.”
Time in Oxford will allow Murphy to connect with family and the Rebels’ coaching staff.
“My brother is a student there,” Murphy stated. “We’ve been in contact with coach (Sterlin) Gilbert; he’s a senior offensive analyst for Ole Miss. I am looking forward to talking him up to make that visit as best as possible.”
The connection out of Gainesville was detailed.
“Coach (Ryan) O’Hara and I have a strong relationship,” Murphy shared. “He is a great QB coach. The way they treat their QBs, it is the most foundational and most sound I have seen so far. They worry about your arm care and have arm workouts. The workouts there are individualized. They don’t treat you just like any other position on the team.”
Before touching down in Oxford, Murphy has already taken four game-day visits this fall.
“In Week 1 I went to Baylor, then in Week 2 I went to UTSA, Week 3 I went to Houston, and this past weekend I visited UCF,” Murphy stated.
The trip to Orlando allowed Murphy to connect with head coach Gus Malzahn.
“The visit was great,” Murphy said. “I got to talk with coach Malzahn. I am building a strong relationship with their coaching staff. I am looking forward to continuing building that relationship with them.”
Murphy continued, “I went to talk to coaches in the meeting room. After that, we were walked out to the field by the staff. I talked with coach Malzahn for five to 10 minutes. He said they are interested in me. I told them I am looking forward to going back there and building the relationship with them.”
