College football is won in the trenches; UCF added another warrior on defense to help bring Big 12 wins to the program. As National Letters of Intent were being faxed into various programs across the country on Wednesday, the Knights received a key transmission from Manatee (Bradenton, Fla.) 2024 defensive lineman Tyreek’e Robinson.
Robinson (6-2, 320) was a brute throughout his senior campaign with the Hurricanes gobbling up offensive linemen so his backers could roam but still produced 47 stops, 30 solo, in 12 games.
Off the field, 18 offers were handed over with two finalists in the running.
“Towards the end it was Louisville and UCF,” Robinson said. “It was between those two. I was going back and forth talking to the coaches.”
The three-star defender spoke about his recruiting process with the Knights’ coaching staff, “Early on, it was great. At the beginning, I visited them last year around this time, I went to campus and talked to their coaches. As the weeks went on, more offers were coming in. Our communication has remained there.
“As it got close, I texted their defensive line coach, coach (Kenny) Martin, to let him know that I am still interested. Through the recruiting process, some got back with me to let me know where the roster is at; coach Martin said the same thing to me. He got me a spot, and now I have a place to call home.”
UCF was always a contender for Robinson’s commitment.
“I liked them from the beginning; from when I first visited,” Robinson shared. “A few weeks ago, in early January, I visited again. I talked to coach Martin again. He laid out the plan for me. He was straight up and honest. A lot of his guys are returning, All-Americans; they are coming back. They have a guy going to the draft, and he has four or five guys ready to play in the NFL. He told me ‘Stick with us, you will be in that spot’.”
The transition onto the collegiate field for Robinson will be easier than for most.
“They told me I would pretty much do the same thing that I was doing at Manatee,” Robinson stated. “Unlike others, they play a four- and a three-man front. Their line is similar to mine. I wouldn’t have to play a new technique. My defensive line coach said the drills we do in practice are the same coach Martin does in his practices.”
The visit last month set the stage for Robinson to join the Knights.
“I took two unofficial visits there, one last year around this time and another in early January,” Robinson said. “We talked in January about the plan they have for me and how they have things set up. I will be set; I won’t have to worry about things. UCF is a great fit for me.
“Coach Martin, I like who he is. He is a great guy. He will be straight up with you. He tells you what they offer and what they don’t offer. They went over the plan, how they will set you up for life to help you get where you want to be.”
Robinson gave insight into his commitment to the Knights during his January trip to Orlando.
“It was great,” Robinson shared. “As we were talking, towards the end of the meeting, he asked ‘Are you ready? Do you want this’. I said, “Yeah.” He said, ‘Great, if you didn’t, I would have done this for nothing’; he had the commitment graphic ready. Knowing they wanted me was a great feeling.”
UCF entered National Signing Day with 11 Class of 2024 players already enrolled and seven that had signed their National Letter of Intent.
