Being in a Division-I system learning how the collegiate game works means something along college football’s recruiting trail. Having size (5-10, 183) and verified 4.49 speed (Mercer) with the ability to play corner, nickel, and safety adds up to a prospect college programs across the country would be interested in as part of the 2024 recruiting cycle. Suiting up this fall for California’s Fullerton College, D’Juan Grant will put his skills in the secondary on display for all to see.
Out of New Caney High School in Texas, Grant was a three-star recruit in the 2021 class signing with Louisiana-Monroe. Redshirting his freshman season with the Warhawks transferring this spring, Grant spoke about his time with ULM.
“It was a great experience,” Grant said. “ULM is a great place to be. I feel I grew as an athlete there. I had to get in the classroom and learn the game better than what I was taught. I learned you have to grind to get what you want, no one will do it for you.”
The time in the Warhawks’ secondary prepared Grant to execute any kind of coverage.
“We ran Cover 4, Cover 6, Cover 2, man sometimes – we ran everything,” Grant stated.
Grant will showcase his versatility this fall with the Hornets.
“I am playing safety and nickel; it is a great experience,” Grant shared. “It is like starting over, but it is a great experience and makes me want it more.”
The time at corner with ULM will translate at safety and nickel.
“I’m bringing great cover skills, aggressiveness, and I will hit no matter,” Grant said. “No matter what, I will hit. I bring leadership skills and a strong football IQ. Since I have been in college for a little while, it is easier seeing the field, and helping the younger guys understand the game better.”
Preparing for the upcoming season and different positions, Grant is putting time in on his game.
“I am working on man techniques – all techniques,” Grant stated. “I am working on being more technical. You can’t always play with true talent; you have to polish yourself.”
Before the season begins, Grant has been on a college camp circuit this summer.
“I just went to a Mississippi Valley camp, I earned an offer at that camp,” Grant said.
Grant continued, “That camp was great. From all the camps I been to so far this summer, Mercer, Georgia State, and Kennesaw State, at all those camps I have gained interest from Syracuse, Ole Miss, they recorded my work out, they got their hands on me, and a lot of other big schools; Kennesaw, Mercer, Southern Illinois, and Gardner Webb.”
A partial list of teams that are showing interest was provided by Grant, “Georgia Southern, Gardner Webb, Charleston Southern, Syracuse, Citadel, Ole Miss, Jackson State, Bethel (TN), East Central Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, and Ball State. I am open to all opportunities. There should be a few offers rolling in soon.”
The next camp stop for Grant is at Sacramento State on June 15.
