There’s a maturation process with every sport with some handling leveling up better than others. In the state of Michigan, 2027 quarterback Bryce Backus (6-3, 180) is receiving varsity snaps with Caledonia High School responding to the challenge. The Fighting Scots are not calling upon their rising talent to win games, but they are setting him up for future success one game at a time.
Through five games this season, Backus is filling up the stat sheet with 889 passing yards hitting at a 63.7 percent clip posting 12 scores on the board. Putting his dual threat abilities to work, he’s rushed for 238 yards with three trips into the end zone.
The mix between freshman ball and varsity snaps was explained.
“I’m playing four quarters on the freshmen team and on varsity I’m playing in one quarter, and end of the game,” Backus detailed.
An update on the season was given, “It is going really well. I am trying to lead my team; we just lost two games. We’re bouncing back. We are not used to losing. Last year and the year before we were undefeated, I am trying to pick them up.”
Backus spoke about the Fighting Scots’ offensive attack, “We normally run three receivers, one running back, and a H-back. My favorite routes are posts, I like my 10 and outs, and go routes.”
Asked about getting varsity snaps, Backus replied, “It is really cool. It is a great experience. I can’t wait to start on varsity in a couple of years.”
Teams in the region have already identified Backus as a top future performer.
“I just visited Eastern Michigan for a game,” Backus said. “I have Western Michigan and Central Michigan coming up. Rutgers has followed me on social media. I’m receiving interest from a lot of MAC schools. Minnesota is also showing interest.”
The time in Ypsilanti with the Eagles was covered.
“It was really cool,” Backus stated. “I got to see their facilities. Being on the field watching the players warm up, it was a whole different atmosphere.
More details from the visit were shared, “They gave us a tour and separate coaches introduced themselves. Their head coach, coach (Chris) Creighton, spoke with us. We talked to some of the players and then went on the field to watch them warm up.”
Backus spoke about heading to Kalamazoo to see the Broncos.
“I’ve been to Western Michigan a couple of times; I love how close it is to my house,” Backus said. “I love their stadium and their offensive scheme. They pass it a lot and air it out.”
Teammate ties are helping the Chippewas recruit Backus early.
“One of the players from Caledonia is going there,” Backus stated. “I have been there before. Their facilities are really nice. I think it is a cool school.”
The Fighting Scots are 5-2 on the season with a league game on Friday against East Kentwood (3-4).
