Quinton Cage emerged from the 2018 season with Archbishop Rummel High School as a do-everything defender in the back eight. Going up against top 5A Louisiana competition, the 5-10, 185-pound, tough as nails playmaker put an end to 73 plays with seven sacks, four forced fumbles, and five passes broken up playing inside and outside linebacker, nickelback, and as a hybrid walk-down safety. Offers have rolled in for the three-star talent coming from Liberty, Nicholls State, Northwestern State, Tulane, Louisiana-Monroe, Southern, Southern Miss, Austin Peay, and Mercer.
With top national camps and combines upcoming, interest on the rise, and unofficial visits to be taken, I sat down for an in-depth one-on-one with one of Louisiana’s top Class of 2020 defenders.
Interview
Quinton, you have an edge to your game, call it a nastiness. What is your mindset once you step foot on the field?
“My mindset is to kill everything. It is kill or be killed out there.”
With that thought, you had a great strip-six last season taking what is yours. Walk me through that play if you will.
“Going into that game, our head coach was asking us for big plays. I wanted to make the play. The first play of the game, it was just a natural instinct. I do things on the field I don’t even know I can do. I always try to play to the best of my abilities.”
There is no denying that you are a playmaker with a nose for the ball, what do you feel are the overall strengths to your game?
“My tackling, my cover skills, and my football IQ. I can see things before they happen.”
You played middle linebacker and on the outside last year, what were all the roles and responsibilities you had within the defensive scheme?
“It depended on who we played. In some packages I was an over the top safety, sometimes I was a nickelback, and I played all the linebacker spots. Whatever they needed me to do, I did.”
Which position do you like playing best?
“I like playing nickel the best. I can cover people and I am close to the line to make tackles against the run.”
Of all the games played last season, which was your best performance and why?
“My best game was either against John Curtis (Christian) or Jesuit. I’d have to say John Curtis.”
Why the John Curtis game? What did you do well?
“I had 12 tackles, a strip-fumble recovery, score a touchdown. I did a little bit of everything in that game.”
What are you focusing on with your game this spring?
“I am mainly focused on covering. I want to show coaches I can cover. I am working on my footwork and hip drills. I know I will need it in college.”
Is there an area of your game you feel gets overlooked?
“Me as a defensive back and my cover skills. I don’t do much covering unless we are in man. As a linebacker, I have no one to cover because I drop back into a one. I want to show the coaches out there that I can cover.”
Are you going to any national camps or combines this spring?
“Yes, sir. I am going to a Nike Opening Regional and to an Under Armour All-American Camp in New Orleans.”
How many offers do you have now?
“I have nine offers.”
Which schools are showing interest?
“I am receiving interest from Houston, Tennessee, Kansas, and Vanderbilt.”
Have you visited any schools yet?
“Yes, sir. I have visited Tulane.”
How did the Tulane visit go?
“It went well. It was an eye catcher.”
What caught your eye?
“Their facilities and the plan they have set up for their players after college. With a degree from Tulane, they talked about the jobs and benefits one can get after college.”
Do you have any visits coming up?
“I am visiting Houston on Thursday.”
What has you excited about visiting Houston?
“It is the “Big H”. The love the staff has been showing to me is great. And we get to attend a basketball game.”
That will be fun. Are you playing any other varsity sports for Rummel?
“Yes, sir. I compete in track and I wrestle.”
Which events in track?
“The 4×1, 4×2, and 200.”
What is your best time in the 200?
“22.8.”
Being in Louisiana, how did the Mardi Gras celebrations go this year?
“It went really well. I was only able to go to two parades this year. I was in Vegas when it started and then I had other football activities.”
What do you do with all the beads collected from the parades?
“My parents own a float, we throw them.”
Quinton, it was great learning more about you and your game today. I appreciate your time and wish you success at the upcoming camps.
“Thank you.”
