A lot of Class of 2017 recruits have room to grow both on the field and on recruiting boards, but perhaps few have as much room to grow all the way around than Xavier Bell. The Mater Dei safety is a 6’1” – 6’2”, 190, pound, stacked athlete with a world of potential ahead of him on the field. A freak injury cut his junior season short, but in the few games he got to play he proved to be a difference maker and one of the more intriguing recruits heading into his senior year in the nation.
Bell truly has it all when it comes to the student-athlete portion of the measurables. The size is there and the speed is most definitely there. His best 40-yard dash time is 4.46 and has the track speed to prove it. Last year he ran the 100 meters in 11.1 and the 200 in 21.7. He also competed in the 4×1 and 4×4 showing he not only has the on the field desired quickness but he also has the stamina. He also has a GPA hovering around 3.0 showing he puts the time in off the field as well.
Mater Dei went 10-3 last season playing in the tough Trinity League in southern California with Bell coming in from an ankle injury at the right time. In the final four games of the season, he produced 22 tackles, forced a fumble, picked off three passes, and scored a touchdown against Santa Margarita (45-14 win), Lakewood (66-14 Round 1 of the playoffs), Serra (28-27), and Centennial (42-36, eventual California state champs).
In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I got a couple of minutes with Bell at the Nike Opening regional in Los Angeles covering his offseason schedule and recruiting interests.
