*Updated Friday, Nov. 27 – 22 games effected
As we push deeper into the 2020 college football season, the attempt to salvage some cherished on the field traditions are slipping away. Last week, nearly 20 games were cancelled across the country, and our beloved sport is quickly reaching that highwater mark yet again reaching 13 midweek.
Key regional rivalry games were on the slate for Week 13 with the Apple Cup being front and center in the Pac-12. Washington State did not meet conference protocols forcing Washington to look elsewhere. A carrot was dangled that an undefeated BYU team might get a shot at a Power 5 team, but the Pac-12 filled that spot having Utah traveling to Seattle.
The frustrating season for Wisconsin continues to spiral out of control. The Badgers entered the preseason ranked No. 14 taking down Illinois 45-7 but had back-to-back games against Nebraska and Purdue cancelled, picked up on Nov. 14 beating Michigan, and then dropped a game last week at Northwestern (17-7). This week, the Badgers’ game against Minnesota has been cancelled taking them out of Big Ten divisional title consideration, out of the conference championship, and out of any hope for a playoff berth. For those in the area, the push on this year’s game is the first time the two programs have not met on the field since 1906.
In the SEC, as seen in the Pac-12, a twist and turn to get a game in has taken place. Last week Arkansas had just enough players to satisfy the threshold to play dropping a close one to LSU (27-24), but this week the Razorbacks do not have the numbers to meet up with Missouri. The Tigers will instead play Vanderbilt, a team that was supposed to play Tennessee.
In a show of determination, Western Kentucky agreed to reschedule their game against Charlotte opting to play on Tuesday, Dec. 1. In a further oddity, the game will begin at 10:30 a.m.
A bit of unfinished business may be felt on the UAB roster after their final home game to be played on Legion Field was cancelled. Southern Miss did not have the numbers to play this week giving the Blazers their third consecutive missed game.
