One of the counted pieces for Mundy’s Mill High School (Jonesboro, Ga.) heading into the 2023 schedule was the return of defensive standout Joshua Ofor (6-1, 210). Throughout Ofor’s junior campaign, he hunted the pigskin as a do-all linebacker. The Tigers have sprung out of the gates this fall to a 3-0 record with their three-star 2024 prospect leading the way.
Ofor filled the defensive stat sheet last fall playing all over the field and is doing so again with extra time on offense.
“Linebacker is my main position, but I am also playing strong safety, running back, our fullback/hammer position, and at tight end,” Ofor said.
Off the edge, on the strongside, or dropping in coverage, Ofor was able to compile 85 stops last season, 53 solo with 10.5 tackles for a loss, two sacks, two picks, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. Another big season is happening.
“It has been great,” Ofor shared. “I am averaging over 10 tackles a game and we are 3-0, one of the best starts in our school’s history.”
On his skills as a defender, Ofor is seeing his skills improving.
“I’m mainly seeing it in my reading, getting to the ball faster, and getting off blocks,” Ofor stated. “Me getting off blocks has definitely improved.”
College programs have presented Ofor with 23 scholarships to date.
“They are recruiting me mainly as a linebacker, but also as a linebacker-safety hybrid,” Ofor said.
With Kansas State, Tennessee-Chattanooga, and South Florida showing interest, Ofor listed the teams pushing for his verbal commitment, “Ole Miss, NC State, East Carolina, Georgia State, and Western Kentucky.”
Unofficial visits were taken over the summer to Ole Miss and NC State with a paid for trip to East Carolina.
“It went well,” Ofor shared. “That was the best G5 school I have been to. We went ax throwing, ate good food, they spoke with me about their academics, took me on tours, and I had a good time with the players. They weren’t in season; I was able to spend time with the players.”
Another official trip is on the schedule.
“I am going to NC State on an official this weekend,” Ofor stated.
While Ofor is on campus for the Notre Dame showdown, he gave insight into his excitement for the visit and relationship with the Wolfpack staff.
“I am excited to see the whole city and the campus, and to see how the team is,” Ofor said. “My relationship with NC State’s coaches is really good. I am in touch with their head coach, coach (Dave) Doeren, and their defensive coordinator, coach (Tony) Gibson.”
No other official visits are set for Ofor, but a trip to Oxford to see the Rebels is a possibility. Any program wanting Ofor better act fast.
“I don’t have a commitment date set, but I want to do it this month or in October,” Ofor shared.
